The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases was founded in 1738 as The Mineral Water Hospital to provide care for the impoverished sick who came to Bath in the hope of a cure.  It was designed by John Wood the Elder with stone donated by Ralph Allen.

This splendid exhibition at the Holburne Museum explores the little known stay of Joseph Wright of Derby in Bath from 1775 to 1777, following his travels in Italy.  Placing him within the artistic milieu of the Georgian Spa, it will show not only his fine portraits and landscapes but a dazzling array of pictures of Vesuvius and firework displays in Rome that he worked up from drawings in his studio in Bath.
