Private visit to Lloyds Register of Shipping

The magnificent headquarters of Lloyds Register of Shipping was designed in 1899 by Thomas Edward Collcutt, designer of the Savoy Hotel and the Palace Theatre.  The spectacular sequence of richly-decorated interiors has been described as in an exuberant Arts and Crafts Baroque style and includes some of the finest sculpture, joinery, plasterwork and metalwork of the period.

Lloyds Register was set up in 1760 by customers of Edward Lloyd’s Coffee House to survey and assess the quality of ships both in existence and under construction for insurance purposes.  In the twentieth century the Register expanded into other industries, in particular the energy sector.
