Visit to the Royal College of Physicians with Peter Basham, Collections Officer, Royal College of Physicians
Founded in 1518, the Royal College of Physicians of London is the oldest medical college in England. Their present modernist headquarters was built by Sir Denys Lasdun in 1964 and has a seventeenth-century oak-panelled room, a marble portrait gallery and ceremonial hall. The museum dates back to William Harvey’s donation in 1656 and contains a remarkable library, portraits, drawings and sculpture, fine silver and medical instrument collections which give a fascinating insight into the treatment and study of medicine.
