Holbein and the Court of Henry VIII

The accession of Henry VIII in April 1509 transformed English political life, and his glittering court became the centre of princely magnificence and patronage. Following the Reformation, the need for a new iconography of kingship was brilliantly fulfilled by Hans Holbein the Younger, who provided unforgettable images of Henry VIII and members of his court.

This course will look at the nature of kingship in England and the relationship between church and state, the political significance of royal buildings, heraldry and iconography, the spread of humanism and the impact of the Italian Renaissance on the arts.
