Raphael and the Renaissance of Rome

The ascendancy of the City of Rome in the early sixteenth century as the artistic and intellectual centre of Italy drew celebrated painters and architects to the Papal court. It was here that the youthful Raphael fulfilled his artistic potential.

This course will trace the supremacy of Rome over other Italian City States, the revival of papal patronage, the work of Raphael both as painter and architect and his place in the artistic life of Rome.
