Renaissance Italy
Society and the Arts

Lavish patronage and the building of fine houses was increasingly accepted during the fifteenth century as an honourable and moral activity for the private citizen, thus allowing him to acquire fame for his good taste and arouse admiration for the splendour of his establishment.

This course will look at the role of the collector and scholar in Renaissance society, the use of sculpture for both public and private purposes, the status of rich textiles and other treasures within the interior and the place of music in everyday life.
