The Romanesque in France 950-1150

The period following the disintegration of Charlemagne’s empire and the dominance of the barbarian invaders saw an extraordinary outpouring of energy and inspiration in every branch of life.

This course will look at the flowering of the Romanesque in France, its regional diversity, the power and patronage of the new monastic orders and the remarkable revival of technical skill and artistry in the fields of architecture, sculpture, wall painting, manuscript illumination and goldsmiths’ work.
