Peter Paul Rubens: His Life and Times

Rubens was one of the most outstanding artists of the seventeenth century and his work was coveted by royal courts across Europe. He was a remarkably energetic and versatile artist who brought an exuberance and spontaneity to all his subjects – portraits, religious works, scenes from classical history and landscapes.

This course will look at the influence of Italy and the Counter-Reformation on Rubens’ work, his unique creative process and technical innovations, his role as a diplomat, and his dominance of the artistic life of his time.
