| Shakespeare
at Hampton Court
James I spent Christmas and New Year of 1603-4 at Hampton Court
Palace and, as part of the lavish festivities, the King’s
Men performed a number of plays in the Great Hall before the Royal
Family. William Shakespeare was almost certainly among the company,
and several of his plays were performed.
Shortly afterwards, James convened the Hampton Court Conference
at the Palace in an attempt to resolve continuing religious conflict
and this was to lead to the commissioning of a new English translation
of the Bible – the King James Bible.
This day of lectures will provide a background to these key events
at the beginning of James I’s reign - the personality of the
King, his handling of the religious issues of the day and the nature
of the Christmas festivities at Hampton Court.
“Much Ado About Nothing” is one of three plays being
produced by The Globe Theatre Company to celebrate the four hundredth
anniversary of Shakespeare’s performances in the Great Hall
at Hampton Court. |
