Velazquez and the Spanish Golden Age

The life of Velazquez (1599-1660), from his youth in the great cosmopolitan city of Seville to his service as artist and courtier in Madrid, spans the great age of Spanish painting, literature and poetry. The period also saw the decline of Spain as a formidable European power due to its faltering economy and prolonged warfare.

This course will look at the character of the Spanish court under Philip III and Philip IV, the growth of Madrid as the country’s new capital with its royal and private palaces, the painting and sculpture produced by Velazquez’s contemporaries, and the work of Velazquez himself – his brilliant skills as a portraitist, his complex mythologies and his virtuoso handling of paint, so influential for avant-garde artists in the nineteenth century.
