The Parisian world of Edouard Vuillard 1890-1914
Paris at the turn of the century was exciting, progressive and
eclectic and a magnet for artists lured by the fame of figures such
as Cezanne and Gauguin. It was into this world that Vuillard (1868-1940)
emerged as a founder member of the Nabis group and, together with
Bonnard, became a leading practitioner of intimate domestic scenes
known as intimisme.
This course will set the early career of Vuillard against the background
of fin-de-siecle Paris, the Exposition Universelle of 1900, avant-garde
theatre, music and ballet together with the work of young experimental
artists such as Bonnard, Derain, Picasso and Matisse.
