Studies in Art

Please note: this event has now passed

The slow disintegration of the Mughal Empire in the eighteenth century gave rise to a period of political turmoil and change, with rival Indian rulers and the British laying claim to territory and power.

This course will look at the extraordinarily rich culture of the maharajas and their princely courts, their extravagant lifestyles and exotic tastes  and the fashion for all things European.  It will also consider the changing role of the maharajas and their relationship with the British from the time of the East India Company to the last days of the Raj.
