Visit to Burgh House and the exhibitions Helen Oxenbury: Illustrating the Land of Childhood, and Victorian Idylls: Kate Greenaway and Helen Allingham with Amy Miller, Curator, Burgh House
These exhibitions highlight the work of three much-loved artists and illustrators who have associations with Hampstead. Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) is best known for her charming illustrations of children’s books capturing the mood of the late Victorian age while Helen Allingham (1848-1926), who began her career as an illustrator, later became renowned for her watercolours depicting rural scenes with picturesque farmhouses, cottages and gardens. Both women were lifelong friends and often sketched together on Hampstead Heath. Helen Oxenbury, who is well known for her delightful illustrations of childhood, is now having her first solo exhibition showing a range of works from the 1970s to the present.

Visit to the exhibition Heiress: Sargent’s American Portraits at Kenwood House with Ella Letort, Curator, Kenwood House
Marking the centenary of John Singer Sargent’s death, this fascinating exhibition reveals the stories behind the American heiresses who crossed the Atlantic to marry into the British aristocracy. In these exceptional and exuberant portraits, Sargent captured not only the glamour and allure of his sitters but also their striking confidence which hints at much more interesting lives than suggested by the ‘Dollar Princess’ label.
